The European Centre for Conflict Prevention (ECCP) in cooperation with Search for Common Ground and the Institute for Media, Policy and Civil Society (IMPACS) invites you with great pleasure to the international seminar on The Role of Media in Peacebuilding.
The event is held in De Rode Hoed in Amsterdam on the 15th of December 2003 and is organised as part of the Media & Peacebuilding project of ECCP, and is supported by the Netherlands National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development (NCDO).
We have seen too often that the media is used as a tool in support of terror, violence, and destruction, while the opposite is also true: the media have an enormous positive potential in building peace. For example, by providing and sharing unbiased information, presenting diverse views and promoting the respect for human rights and peaceful coexistence.
The main objective of this seminar is to present and explain the role of the media in peacebuilding to a wider audience, and to illustrate the different possibilities through several presentations from the field. At the opening of the seminar the recently published book The Power of the Media: A Handbook for Peacebuilders will be officially launched and presented to the Dutch Minister of Development Cooperation. This book, published in cooperation with European Centre for Common Ground and IMPACS, provides readers with an operational framework, 12 extensive case studies, and a directory with 68 profiles of organisations working in this field. Furthermore, the book illustrates best practices in media projects such as radio and television programming, training, transitional journalism development and intended outcome programming.
Keynote speakers on the seminar will include John Marks (President, Search for Common Ground) and Shauna Sylvester (Director, IMPACS). Furthermore, there will be several presentations by organisations working in this field worldwide. Three working groups will focus on the subject of radio drama for peace in Burundi, sensitive journalism training in Sri Lanka, and the role of community media in Afghanistan. These presentations illustrate the wide-ranging possibilities for the media to assist the peacebuilding process. Additionally, special attention will be given to best practices and lessons learned aimed at the field in general.
The programme of the day can be found on www.conflict-prevention.net. Costs are 25 Euro, including lunch and a copy of the book The Power of the Media: A Handbook for Peacebuilders.
